Meet Laura Green, People Manager at AMG Chrome who began her journey with The Work-wise Foundation around 15 years ago.

Tell us about your company...

AMG Chrome is a manufacturer based in Rotherham.  Working in the People Department we provide support to the Rotherham manufacturing site.  AMG is a great investor in people through development and training.  I feel very grateful for the potential the company has seen in me over my 10 years of service, particularly my line manager.  They have also supported me not only through my apprenticeship but professional qualifications.

Why did you attend the programme/event delivered by The Work-wise Foundation?

Having left school following completing my A Levels, I didn’t know what I wanted to do in terms of a career.  The summer academy gave me an opportunity to explore the world of work and helped me to put a foot in the door.

What has been your education to employment journey so far?

After completing both my GCSE’s and A Levels, I attended the The Work-wise Foundation summer academy where I was placed for work experience at AMG (known then as London & Scandinavian Metallurgical Company Limited).  Following a successful placement I commenced an apprenticeship with the Company, completing my Business Administration Level 2 and Level 3.  After completing my apprenticeship I decided to move into the Human Resource field having been given an opportunity as HR Administrator.  As part of this opportunity the company funded both my Level 3 CIPD Certificate in HR Practice and Level 5 CIPD Certificate in HR Management.

What do you like most about your current position?

My current role as Senior HR Advisor gives me opportunity to get involved in a range of HR activities such as recruitment, employee relation cases, performance management and employment law as well as involvement in strategic work such as employee development and retention.  I enjoy the variety of work and opportunity to develop wellbeing and employee experience initiatives through project work.

What are your future aspirations?

I hope to continue my career at AMG by continuing my development into a management role.  Along side this I plan to increase my professional qualification to a charted level.

Please tell us how your experience with The Work-wise Foundation has impacted your career.

My decision to join summer academy put me in the right place at the right time. Had I not attended, I would not have been exposed to the possible opportunities available to me as well as being introduced to a successful employer. 

Summer academy shaped my future, and had it not been for the investment of both The Work-wise Foundation and employers such as AMG volunteering their time to support young people into the world of work I would not had the opportunity I did. 

This has inspired me in my role, and I also dedicate some of my time volunteering at school events such as mock interviews and careers events as well as supporting on employer day at the The Work-wise Foundation summer academy.

If you could give any advice to a young person, what would it be?

Not knowing what you want to do when you leave school and equally not knowing what opportunities are out there can be a scary time.  Don’t be afraid to reach out to programs such as The Work-wise Foundation provide or local employers to express interest.  Having been involved in heavily in recruitment processes, showing an interest and willingness to learn can go along way om first impressions.
