Every year, hundreds of young people from across South Yorkshire come together for this one-day event designed to inspire, excite, and open doors to the world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Manufacturing)

A Day Designed to Spark Curiosity

The North Star Science School brings together Year 8 and 9 students for a jam-packed day of discovery. From the moment they arrive, students are immersed in an atmosphere buzzing with possibility.

The event blends inspirational talks with hands-on workshops, so young people don’t just hear about science and engineering—they get to experience it. North Star makes learning feel real, exciting, and most importantly fun.

The goal is simple: to ignite curiosity and show that a future in STEAM is not just achievable, but full of opportunity.

 

Where It All Began

North Star Science School is part of the wider Science Summer School programme, co-founded in 2012 by Professor Brian Cox CBE and Lord Andrew Mawson OBE. Their mission was bold: “To make Britain the best place in the world to do science and engineering, by inspiring the next generation”

Since then, the programme has grown across the UK, with each region tailoring its events to local strengths. For South Yorkshire, that means building on the area’s rich industrial heritage while highlighting the innovation happening right now in manufacturing, engineering, and technology.

North Star is proudly rooted in its community, showcasing not just national role models but also local success stories—so young people can see themselves in those paths.
