Laura Barber, 23, from Dronfield attended The Work-wise Foundation Summer Academy in 2013, gained a placement with AMG Superalloys and subsequently started with them as an Administration Apprentice in September that year.

Laura successfully completed her A Levels at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School, and felt that rather than go to University, finding employment was the best career path for her. However, she had little idea what she wanted to do. Laura was encouraged to attend the Summer Academy in August 2013 and undertook employability training and a placement with London & Scandinavian Metallurgical Co Ltd, now AMG Superalloys. Her placement was in Marketing, helping the company with plans for their 75th Anniversary Celebrations. On successful completion of the placement, the HR Manager asked Laura to come back to cover holiday leave. Laura volunteered to do this and was subsequently offered an Apprenticeship in Business Administration, training at the newly opened AMRC Training Centre (Laura was the first Admin Apprentice the company had recruited).

Five years on, Laura has completed her Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business Adminstration and has now achieved her CIPD (Chartered Institute in Personnel and Development) Level 3. Foundation Certificate in HR Practice. Alongside her HR and Payroll responsibilities, Laura manages the company’s work experience programme and interactions with schools/young people where she is able to put her own journey, experiences and knowledge to good use.

Laura says “I really didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school but The Work-wise Foundation’s Summer Academy came just at the right time and gave me the opportunity to explore options and develop my employability skills, and amazingly led directly to my first job, all within a month. I feel very fortunate that AMG saw the potential and invested in me and hope others get the same opportunities as I’ve had.”
