Dan Habbershaw, 21 from Hornsea, was studying for his 1st year of an Aerospace Engineering undergraduate degree from the University of Sheffield and became Team Leader for 2018’s SELA cohort (Sheffield Engineering Leadership Academy). As a first year engineering department student you are able to apply to join SELA going through an application and interview process. Following involvement with Get up to Speed with STEM in 2018, Dan had the opportunity of a 1 week placement with Prodrive and 10 week placement with Headline Sponsor – BG Engineering, part of the CBE Group, as a Technical Engineer. Whilst in the role, Dan designed a layout for their production area for a new product line.

“Last year, my team and I at SELA presented Think Inside the Box, breaking down engineering to show everyone what a wide range it covers and what it was capable of. In the process we had VR experiences, Lego rockets and self balancing robots! We even managed to send hundreds of tickets into space with a huge balloon! Being involved with Get up to Speed was incredibly rewarding as we got to inspire the next generation of engineers and show them that being an engineer doesn’t just mean hammers and spanners, there’s so much more. It also allowed me to meet one of my biggest heroes in David Richards, current Head of British Motorsport and former Formula 1 team boss. After showing him around our event and expressing a great interest in motorsport, he invited me to gain valuable work experience at his company Prodrive, who head Aston Martin’s race team and much more. The experience I had there was amazing—being around World Championship winning cars and such a professional team is something I will never forget. I was a also able to secure a summer job working for BG Engineering, a cutting edge engineering facility manufacturing parts for companies all over the globe. Here I saw what it was like working on the shop floor and office, giving me a great insight into how engineering companies work.”
